Part of the Ludvigsen Library Series, this picture-led 125-page softback is published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1955 World Sportscar Championship which Mercedes-Benz won with the SLR in spite of withdrawal from Le Mans.

The astonishing aircraft-inspired sports-racers –agile as a jungle cat but built like a tank, said John Fitch - are celebrated here in a series of black and white pictures, most from the Leica of Rodolfo Mailander. Some are repeats, some you will have seen before, but there are several shots front the 1955 season, plus studies, of Kling experimenting at Le Mans with the air brake, and a few technical drawings. The only text, aside from captions, is a three-page introduction into the technicalities of this magnesium-bodied, Grand Prix car-derived racer, with its desmodromic-valved, direct fuel-injected, roller-bearing straight-eight. But it would have been nice to see a breakdown of the nine (or 10) chassis histories from build up to the present day.
